Weaving a new loom

The project is part of Santo Tirso City Hall’s “Partnerships for Urban Regeneration – Margens do Ave”.

This workshop aims to build a collaborative sculptural piece, which symbolizes the transformation of the old “Spinning Mill” in the current Santo Tirso City Hall’s Cultural Factory.

PROPOSAL

Recovering the memory of the place and paying homage to the weaving work of the “Spinning and Textile Factory of Santo Thyrso”, we propose to have the local population weave, in a new loom, new fabrics that will give body to the soon to be inaugurated Cultural Factory.

Being the old “Spinning and Textile Factory of Santo Thyrso – Fábrica do Teles”, a space that belonged, as a workplace, to the daily reality of many families of the Santo Tirsense community, we understand that this legacy can be revived and transformed into new cultural and artistic practices.

The main objectives seek to conceive a collaborative project with the local community of Santo Tirso, to remember the primordial functions of the place in close dialogue with a new requalified space through the practical reference of weaving, to promote the practice of techniques that are in oblivion through the construction of a sculptural object that can remain in the place and establish bridges with the International Museum of Contemporary Sculpture; to bring the Cultural Factory space closer to the Santo Tirso population through the realization of an artistic workshop.

This workshop can be developed by different age groups or by a single group that follows the process from beginning to end. It is advisable that the ages of the participants are at least 10 years old or more, with no limit for adult age. It is, thus, to the criteria of Santo Tirso’s City Hall, the choice of the group or groups to participate in this workshop.

EXECUTION

The workshop/construction of the sculptural piece took place between the 3rd, 4th and 5th of September.

Its execution was carried out by two classes of Modatex students, from the Weaving and Modeling courses, and students from the Associação de Solidariedade e Acção Social de Santo Tirso.

We, Casa da Imagem, would like to thank Santo Tirso’s City Hall for the opportunity to implement this project, and all the participants for their great availability in receiving this proposal, as well as the quality of their work.
