Casa da Imagem [House of Image] is an artistic and educational centre and a private, non-profit entity with public interest status. Casa da Imagem is part of the Fundação Manuel Leão and is, therefore, committed in pursuing its goals and mandate. The Foundation organises its activities and initiatives in Vila Nova de Gaia since 1996 and its main purpose is the promotion of public good through the educational, cultural, artistic and socio-charitable domains. It was from the intersection of the two central pillars of the Fundação Manuel Leão, education and art, that Casa da Imagem emerged, offering a space of education and artistic activities, initiatives and endeavours.

Ana Torrie

Joana Mendonça
Artist specialized in art education in non formal contexts, with 15 years of experience in different institutions. With a PhD in Art Education by FBAUP – Porto, graduation in plastic arts by FBAUP, postgraduate in Cultural Management (ULHT, Lisbon), and in Curatorial Studies (FBAUL / Gulbenkian), her main area of activity unfolds in the relationship established between contemporary art and its audiences, and in formal and non-formal education in museum contexts. She has been part of the Educational Service in the Serralves Museum since 2009, mostly in training teachers and other cultural agents, and is a Guest Professor in the Technical Scientific Unit of Visual Arts of the Escola Superior de Educação do Porto since 2018, and in the Architecture Department of Universidade do Minho since 2019. Joana Mendonça participates regularly in national and international conferences, with communications regarding arts education, and is a collaborating member of the art, design and society research institute, FBAUP.

Margarida Azevedo
Educational background in Economics, a PhD in Economic Sciences (Université Paris1-Panthéon Sorbonne), with the title ‘The evaluation of the social impacts of culture: Culture, Arts and Development’, a Master’s in Arts Management (City University London), and a specialisation in Creativity and Urban Political Strategies (Barcelona University). She has been working as a cultural manager consultant, consultant on the third sector, an urban regeneration developer (culture led regeneration) and guest lecturer. Her main field of research is focused on exploring and measuring the social outcomes produced by cultural experiences.

Maria Sottomayor
Visual artist.
Degree in Plastic Arts/Painting (2000-2005) and Master in Artistic Studies/Theory and Art Criticism (2008-2010), both at FBAUP.
Collaborator since 2011 of the resident team of “Arquivo de Memória”, an oral history project that aims to create a database of intangible heritage and for which she idealizes, collects, edits and photographs life stories of the Portuguese senior population.
In the last years has oriented workshops in the area of artistic education with different institutions and for the general public.

Human Rights and Citizenship
Alexandra Severino
Alexandra researches and develop tools to foment legal literacy on human rights through a multidisciplinary approach. The main aim of this permanent residency is to foster a culture of rights and citizenship for youth, starting from pre-school children. Furthermore, the researcher and Casa da Imagem’s team,  cross art and image as vehicles to promote and achieve legal literacy in the aforementioned domains. One of the projects that resulted from this residency was (en)ABLE, a training course to make NGOs more inclusive towards disability. The researcher is also involved in #narcisonline,  a project which tackles the way in which digital media impacts on sharing images and its visibility in the public sphere. Within #narcisonline her role  is to address issues concerning the right of freedom of expression and the right  to privacy, adopting the multidisciplinary method enshrined in the philosophy of the residency. This is an ongoing collaboration.

Inicial Casa da Imagem’s Architects

Ivo Poças Martins e Matilde Seabra graduated in Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto. Since 2003 develop co-authorship projects in their own atelier placed at Bairro da Bouça, Porto. They have received the RECRIA 2007 award with the building rehabilitation at rua D. Manuel II. In 2010, with other architects, they started to edit Fanzine Friendly Fire. Ivo is a PhD student  in Architectur in FAUP since 2010. Matilde collaborats with Fundação de Serralves since 1999, as a Education Department monitor and as a cultural turism travel commicioner.
